MINSK (BELARUS) – Opposition politician Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya of Belarus called for more peaceful protests on Friday, urging supporters to sign an online petition seeking recounting of the presidential vote.
Tsikhanouskaya, who is in neighbouring Lithuania, said in a video posted on YouTube that supporters should demand an official investigation into allegations that last Sunday’s election was rigged.
On Friday, the government released thousands of protesters who were detained in a crackdown after tendering an apology to quell protests across the nation.
In the violent crackdown, two protesters were killed and 6,700 were detained.
On Friday morning, people formed human chains in the capital, Minsk, demanding the resignation of President Alexander Lukashenko.
