LONDON (UK) – Britain wants to accelerate the planning system for the approval of construction projects such as new homes more quickly, according to housing minister Robert Jenrick, who wrote in The Sunday Telegraph newspaper.
Britain has for decades been struggling to build enough housing to be on par with the rising demand, taking to a sharp increase in the house prices. One of the factors blamed for this situation is the time it takes to get permission for planning and the consequent slow pace of consultations.
Jenrick said, “We are introducing a simpler, faster, people-focused system to deliver the homes and places we need. Land designated for growth will empower development – new homes, hospitals, schools, shops and offices will be allowed automatically. People can get going.”
He said a “permission in principle” approach would strike a balance with appropriate checks in some areas.
