WASHINGTON (US) – Key Democrats in the Congress are slated to hold talks with two aides of President Trump to reach a consensus to pump more money into the economy to cushion the effect of the pandemic crisis. This comes as the programme to help unemployed Americans expired.
For the past several months, the Congress has been unable to reach a consensus on the next round of relief measures.
US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer are slated to hold talks with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows at 1300 GMT at the Capitol.
Congress has so far agreed on about $3 trillion (2.3 trillion pounds) in coronavirus relief.
On Friday, Pelosi said that she rejected the administration’s offer to continue the $600 payments for another week, saying it would only make sense “if you are on a path” toward a deal.
“We’re not,” Pelosi said.
