MEXICO CITY (MEXICO) – A representative of United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said on Thursday that the UN agency will fund hotel rooms for women and children threatened by domestic violence in the country from September.
UNICEF aims to curb domestic violence, which it believes has intensified in the country because of the lockdown, said its representative in Mexico in a statement.
It did not provide details on how many individuals the agency hopes to help or how many rooms would be made available.
In June as many as 19,000 formal complaints of domestic violence were lodged and it is up from 15,000 in April, according to data released by the government.
