HANOI (VIETNAM) – The country, which was free from virus infections for months, is bracing for another wave of COVID-19 infections. New cases were reported in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and the Central Highlands.
According to Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, the new wave of infections is different from the second wave in March and all provinces and cities are at risk.
With more than 95 million people, Vietnam is the most populous country in the world to have zero fatalities from the virus.
But that record is being threatened by the outbreak, which was first reported in Danang where thousands of people were holidaying.
Phuc said tourist hotspots in the country have to step up vigil and Danang must be locked down.
In the capital, a pizzeria employee, who had returned from Danang, tested positive and authorities closed the establishment for sanitising.
