LONDON (UK) – The BBC reported on Tuesday that British Airways faced strike action over its bid to slash jobs and pay. This puts more pressure on the airline which has been pummelled by the coronavirus crisis.
According to the report, Unite, the trade union representing British Airways cabin crew said the airline is planning to fire and rehire thousands of workers and it would defend its members through industrial action.
In April, British Airways announced that it would have to slash 12,000 jobs to tide over the crisis.
The trade union has accused the airline of seeking to fire and rehire workers on less agreeable contracts. It refused to engage in talks with the airline for many weeks.
Like other airlines, British Airways is struggling to stay afloat as the pandemic has decimated the aviation sector. Consumer worries about the virus and the new quarantine rules are making recovery even tougher.
