SAO PAULO (BRAZIL) – President Jair Bolsonaro said on Saturday that his coronavirus test has come negative after being quarantined in his residence for weeks.
A photograph posted on social media showed the president with a box of hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malarial drug he credited for his recovery despite a lack of scientific proof about its efficacy. He did not say when he took the test.
The president tested negative thrice this month.
Ever since he was infected, he has been in partial isolation in the presidential residence, taking part in meetings via video calls. He was seen outdoors a few times where he greeted supporters and removing his mask occasionaly while maintaining social distancing.
His country has more than 2.3 million cases, second only to the United States. The virus has killed more than 85,000 people.
He played down the risk of the pandemic comparing it to a flu and defied health experts and locked horns with mayors and governors who imposed lockdowns.
The president said he would begin travelling around the country once he completely recovers.
