CALIFORNIA (US) – The release of Walt Disney Co’s movie “Mulan” has been postponed indefinitely, the firm said on Thursday. This will pummel theatre owners who pinned hopes on the action movie to woo audiences.
ViacomCBS Inc’s Paramount Pictures also announced that the release of “Top Gun: Maverick”, the much-awaited sequel to “Top Gun” featuring Tom Cruise, has been postponed until July 2, 2021 from December 23, 2020.
Though “Mulan” was slated to be released in March, it was delayed several times as movie halls remained closed. Finally, it was scheduled to be released on Aug. 21 sparking hopes among theatre operators for a summer rebound in movie-going.
Disney has also put on hold the next film installments from its franchises, “Avatar” and “Star Wars,” by one year as the pandemic has hampered production.
The “Avatar” sequel will hit theaters in December 2022, and the “Star Wars” movie in December the following year.
“It’s become clear that nothing can be set in stone when it comes to how we release films during this global health crisis,” a Disney representative said. “Today that means pausing our release plans for ‘Mulan’ as we assess how we can most effectively bring this film to audiences around the world.”
“Mulan” was delayed after Warner Bros postponed the August release of Christopher Nolan thriller “Tenet.”
