LONDON (UK) – Italian defence company Leonardo CEO said that other countries have expressed interest to join Tempest, the British-led project to build a new fighter jet with Italy and Sweden.
“Time remains for other partners to join Tempest. You have seen other nations express an interest and we are extremely positive for the future,” Leonardo CEO Alessandro Profumo said on Wednesday.
Earlier, Japan had been mentioned as a possible partner in the Tempest project.
The ambitious project was launched in 2018 and it was later joined by Italy and Sweden.
The country’s biggest defence firm BAE Systems, British engine maker Rolls-Royce, European missile maker MBDA and Swedish defence company Saab are working to develop Tempest, which will replace Eurofighter Typhoon from 2040.
On Monday, Saab revealed that it would invest 50 million pounds ($63 million) in a new future combat air systems centre in Britain.
Bombardier Belfast, Collins Aerospace, GE Aviation and GKN Aerospace also said they would be part of the project.
