TOKYO (JAPAN) – The Nikkei said on Sunday that the UK government has sought Japan’s help to build its 5G wireless networks without Huawei Technologies. This is a further step in a global technology and security tussle between the US and China.
The business daily said UK named NEC Corp and Fujitsu Ltd potential alternative suppliers.
On Thursday, British officials held talks with their counterparts in Tokyo two days after the country ordered Huawei equipment to be removed from its 5G networks by the end of 2027.
As the UK prepares to quit the EU, concerns over the security of Huawei forced Prime Minister Boris Johnson to choose between the United States and China.
According to Nikkei, the latest move is Britain’s bid to bring in new equipment suppliers to boost competition and help reduce costs for the country’s wireless carriers.
Last week, UK digital minister Oliver Dowden said the country was working with its allies to forge stronger rivals to Huawei.
