MOSCOW (RUSSIA) – Russia said on Monday it had intensified patrolling to crack down on people hunting marmots near its border with China and Mongolia after both countries reported cases of bubonic plague, and animals can be carriers.
On Sunday, authorities in Bayan Nur, which is in the Chinese region of Inner Mongolia, came out with a warning after a hospital reported a bubonic plague case.
Chinese authorities banned the hunting and consumption of marmots.
Two cases were also reported in Mongolia and they are linked to peple who eat marmot meat.
Authorities in Russia’s Altai region bordering Kazakhstan, China and Mongolia, said officials were patrolling the area warning people not to ear marmots.
Bubonic plague is highly infectious and often fatal. It is spread by rodents.
