PARIS (Europe) – Unemployment rates in France dropped to an 11-year-low in the first quarter as people without jobs could not seek jobs once France entered the coronavirus lockdown.
The unemployment rate in France fell from 8.1% to 7.8% in the fourth quarter, hitting the lowest rates since late 2008.
The nationwide lockdown in France begun on March 17 reduced those normally classified as unemployed making it impossible to look for work.
Measures of unemployment usually exclude those who say they have stopped looking for jobs.
Pre-lockdown, the unemployment rate in France was 8.2%.
