(U.S.) – U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the U.S. has called on China for the permanent closure of its wildlife wet markets. This was done on citing links between wet markets and zoonotic diseases.
The coronavirus is said to have emerged in a wet market in Wuhan in late 2019. It has spread worldwide killing more than 180,000 people and infecting more than 2.6 million.
“Given the strong link between illegal wildlife sold in wet markets and zoonotic diseases, the United States has called on the People’s Republic of China to permanently close its wildlife wet markets and all markets that sell illegal wildlife.”
