New immigration ban to be signed by Trump on Wednesday

WASHINGTON (U.S.) – U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted out that he would sign an executive order curbing immigration on Wednesday. This comes as part of a move to protect U.S. workers from the economic fallout of coronavirus.

Trump said the new 60-day ban will be applicable to those seeking permanent residency, or “green cards,” to live in the U.S., not temporary workers.

The ban may be renewed for another 60 days or longer; a second-order was also being considered.

Questions over the details of the order remain, the latest in a series of steps Trump has taken to place a clampdown on immigration, a signature election campaign issue which got him in theWhite House in 2016.

The move may face obstacles, with some legal experts of the opinion that worldwide order curbing legal immigration would likely be challenged in court.

Critics say that they view Trump’s new policy as an effort to distract from his coronavirus response as he seeks re-election in November.
