JAKARTA (Asia) – Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo announced that the government is considering to start a new national holiday to prevent the annual mass exodus usually which comes at the end of the Muslim fasting month amid COVID-19 spread concerns.
At a cabinet meeting, Widodo said that that measures could be put in place during the new holiday like making tourist attractions free to “bring some calm to the people”.
Nearly 90% Indonesians are Muslim and they celebrate the end of Ramadan or the Eid al-Fitr with a feast and new clothes, with a return to their home villages or towns.
Ramadan falls over April and May this year.
