LONDON (UK Daily News) – Britain’s health minister Matt Hancock and London city mayor Sadiq Khan have been disputing whether the transport system in London could run more services as passengers continued to travel on packed tube carriages despite social distancing warnings to curb coronavirus spread.
London, unfortunately, has seen the most coronavirus cases in Britain.
On the public transport in the capital, passengers are forced to crush against other after London’s local government reduced train numbers.
Health minister Matt Hancock sees no reason why the transport system should be operating fewer services.
“We should have more tube trains running. There is no good reason in the information I have seen that the current levels of tube provision should be as low as they are.”
– Matt Hancock, Health Minister
Transport for London has warned people to travel only if absolutely necessary in the tube. Many services have been cut as workers have been instructed to stay at home.
However, the underground system is still the transport of choice for thousands of healthcare workers in the city who need to get to work.
London mayor Sadiq Khan calls it impossible to add more tube services. This is because many drivers and staff members were on sick leave or in self-isolation.
“We cannot run more services than we currently are.”
