LONDON- On Sunday, British Prince Harry expressed his sadness on being forced to forfeit his royal duties after he struck a deal with his grandmother Queen Elizabeth and senior Windsors as his wife and him exit their duties as senior royals in an effort to seek an independent future.
On Saturday, the Buckingham Palace and the Queen announced that the couple will no longer be British monarchy’s working members, giving up their “Royal Highness” titles and pay for their own lives, freeing them to pursue new careers.
This new arrangement was made to end the crisis that arose once the couple announced earlier this month that they wanted to cut down official engagements and intended to split their time between North America and Britain.
On Sunday, Prince Harry seemed clearly upset as he addressed the Sentebale charity in a speech saying that this was not the final outcome that he and his wife, Meghan wanted.
The Prince said that the couple hoped to continue their service to the Queen, the Commonwealth and military associations without using public funding and it was unfortunate that it wasn’t possible.
He went on to say that he has accepted the terms of this agreement knowing that it doesn’t change who he is or his commitment. He hopes that everyone understands what the situation had come to, urging the couple to step back from all they have known to take a step ahead into what he perceives to be a more peaceful life.
Under the new arrangement, Harry continues to remain a prince and the couple will retain their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles as they split time between Britain and North America. However, they will not participate in any future royal tours or ceremonial events.
Harry said that coming to such a decision brought him great sadness. The decision to step back came after several months of talks and was not a decision taken lightly. He explained that the couple was not walking away.
Harry believed that as far as this goes, he really did not envision any other option. He went on to say that the UK will always be his home and a place he loves and that will never change.
In a TV interview which aired last October, the couple made it apparent the struggle they faced from the immense media attention.
