LONDON – On Friday, the government said that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson current Downing Street home will be decorated and lit up to countdown Brexit as part of a light display to mark Britain’s exit from the European Union on January 31st.
Johnson suggested a crowdfunding campaign to get the Big Ben bell to ring to mark the exact moment. The Parliament’s clock tower has been largely silent since 2017 because of renovation work.
The public has donated over 200,000 pounds of the 500,000 pounds required to get the Big Ben to bong. The government now revealed that authorities do not believe they shall be allowed to accept this money.
January 31st is momentous for British history as the UK leaves the EU and regains independence- and it will a moment celebrated by some and mourned by others.
The government is trying to use this moment to heal divisions, allowing to get communities to reunite and looks forward to a new Britain that should be built over the course over the next decade.
On January 31st evening, Boris Johnson will address the nation. Earlier that day, Johnson will be holding a special meeting in northern England with his ministers.
The British government plans to broadcast the Downing Street light display on social media with a clock counting down to 2300 GMT, the exact moment when Brexit takes place officially. Other Whitehall buildings will be lit up too.
Union Jack will be flown on all of the Parliament Square flag poles where Nigel Farage, Brexit Party leader, is given permission to conduct a party with music and speeches.
The government is also going to get a commemorative Brexit coin into circulation on the day, the coin inscribed with the words “Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations”.
