LONDON – British opposition Labour Party has to do more to promote aspiration to become a government-in-waiting, said Rebecca Long-Bailey who is the party’s business spokeswoman, while formally launching her leadership campaign.
Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader is stepping down after their dismal election performance. Long-Bailey is second in line to succeed Corbyn, just behind Keir Starmer.
The 40-year-old lawyer spoke to party members in Manchester and said that Labour failed to convince the public that they were competent enough to run the country. People lacked trust in Labour. There is no point in making promises if there is no trust with the basics.
Labour’s renegotiation of Johnson’s Brexit deal with a second referendum was much to the dissatisfaction of Brexit opponents and supporters and there was a surge of complaints against Corbyn regarding the anti-Semitism within the party.
For Labour to win, what it needs is new professionalism.
Long-Bailey is close with trade unions and seems to want to keep Corbyn’s policies more than Starmer does. Starmer’ wanted to take a tougher line against Brexit.
On Friday, Long-Bailey said that there needs to be supplementation of Labour’s existing policies with a greater focus of aspiration.
