LONDON – Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex sued a British newspaper and they will be using evidence from her father Thomas Markle. The legal documents state that the newspaper published a private letter from Meghan to her father.
Last year in October, Meghan took legal action against Mail on Sunday, a tabloid. Her lawyers stated that the letter’s publication was part of a media campaign by the group to publish derogatory and false stories about her and her husband.
At the time, Prince Harry released a statement calling the coverage out and likened it to bullying that his mother Princess Diana was hounded by before her death in 1997 in a car crash in Paris.
Mail on Sunday printed articles referencing a confidential letter from Meghan to her father, breaching her basic human rights and copyright. The paper rejected the accusations saying that the stories were valid owing to Meghan’s royal position.
The paper’s lawyers said that there is a legitimate public interest in members of the royal family and their activities, conduct and behaviour standards among the public. This is not merely related to public conduct but also to family and personal relationships which are integral to the monarchy’s proper functioning.
On Wednesday, Daily Mail reported that Meghan was prepared to testify.
