LAS VEGAS- On Monday, Intel Corp released its Mobileye autonomous car video which navigated Jerusalem’s streets for 20 minutes with 12 on-board cameras and surprisingly no other sensors.
Chipmakers and machine-vision system manufacturers are in competition to provide the brains and eyes of automated vehicles and this development comes at the right time.
A part of the unedited video was showed by Intel at CES tech show’s news conference in Las Vegas. The demo is one to be noted as self-driving technology usually pairs cameras with sensors like lidar or radar to help the vehicle understand its surroundings.
The vehicle easily navigated four-way intersections without traffic lights and weaved traffic by changing lanes and avoiding pedestrians.
Mobileye said that the technology can create 3D models from camera images in 2D for the autonomous driving system to get a better sense of its environment. The processing is done with EyeQ5 chips for autonomous driving.
Mobileye can merge camera-only system information together with lidar and radar systems for self-driving cars.
