LONDON- In the four week run-up to Christmas till December 24th, Aldi UK’s sales rose 7.9% year-on-year. The British arm of the German supermarket saw this rise in numbers thanks to a strong growth in sale of beers, wines and spirits along with a premium product range.
Aldi, the UK’s fifth biggest grocery chain, said that for the first time the sales over that four week period topped a billion pounds.
Measurement of Aldi’s sales on a like-for-like basis seemed to be positive over the period but no figure was provided.
Against the other market leaders like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons, the German supermarket’s UK arm Aldi holds 8% market share and does not trail far behind the market leaders with its aggressive store opening programme.
Aldi has 874 stores around the UK and is on the right track to achieve the target of trading from 1200 stores by 2025.
