LONDON- On Wednesday, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson shall meet the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in London to discuss the opening rounds of trade talks regarding Britain’s formal exit from the bloc on 31st of January.
Two of them are most likely to discuss if they can strike a new trade deal for the transition period which will last till December 2020. Von der Leyen believes that the said time is a short period for all of the issues which need to be negotiated.
A hard deadline has been set by Boris Johnson to reach a new trade deal with the EU, with bets on another Brexit cliff-edge forcing Brussels to move and seal the accord more quickly.
In time for January 31st, the legislation to implement the EU divorce deal with return for further scrutiny to the parliament to be approved just in time.
Unlike the first stage of the Brexit process, this bilateral meeting in London suggests that the second stage of trade talks may be held in both Brussels and London.
