BELFAST- On Thursday, Queen’s University Belfast appointed Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as their chancellor. The mostly ceremonial role was taken up by Clinton in Northern Ireland where, during her husband’s presidency, the process of peace was extremely successful.
Clinton, the 2016 U.S. Presidential candidate, is the first female chancellor of the 175-year-old Queen’s University Belfast.
From 2009 to 2013 when Clinton was Secretary of State, she visited Belfast in support of the 1998 Good Friday peace accord, which Bill Clinton brokered and ended three decades of violence between Catholic nationalists and Protestant unionists who differed on their opinion of Ireland and Northern Ireland being a part of the UK.
Hillary Clinton feels privileged about her Queen’s University Chancellorship as it is a place that she has grown a strong relationship with and has a great fondness for.
Clinton is the Queen’s University Belfast’s 11th chancellor.
Over the next five years, Clinton shall hold the position which includes presiding degree congregations and maintaining the role of advisor and ambassador for the university.
