LONDON- On Thursday, Greggs re-introduced its popular steak bake in a vegan format looking to capitalise on the meatless sausage roll’s success. The meatless sausage roll was the British bakers’ escalator to better profits and 80% share price rise last year.
The new vegan steak bake is not very different from the original, it just uses a meat substitute called Quorn instead of its regular steak filling.
The launch of the meatless steak bake comes a year after the social media success of the vegan sausage roll which was one of the bakers’ fastest selling products over the past six years.
Since the success of the vegan sausage roll, Chief Executive Roger Whiteside said that the baker has been trying to increase its vegan-friendly offerings and try to provide savoury food-on-the-go options for those looking to reduce meat intake.
The numbers of Britons reducing their meat consumption or eliminating it from their diets is on the rise.
Red meat sales in the UK fell by 185 million pounds. However, poultry and fish sales did go up slightly. The trend is being picked up by supermarkets and retailers and they’re responding to this by expanding vegan and vegetarian menu options.
The newly launched vegan steak bake will be priced at 1.55 pounds and will be available from Thursday in 1300 shops and in 700 others by January 16th.
