BISSAU- On Monday, Guinea-Bissau presidential candidate, a former army general and ex-Prime Minister Umaro Cissoko Embalo claims that he is on the course to win the presidential election. His opponent, on the other hand, urges the nation to await the official results of the elections.
Embalo’s victory over his opponent Domingos Simoes Pereira would mean a turnaround from the first round in November wherein Pereira won most votes comfortably.
Sunday’s run-off in which the two competed was to replace Jose Mario Vaz, the incumbent President who was eliminated in the first round.
Regular political sackings, an ill-functioning parliament and corruption marred the five-year term that Vaz held and voters hoped that the newly-elected president would restore the West African nation’s calm.
Official results of the presidential elections are expected on Wednesday. No comments on the vote count have been given by the electoral commission.
According to Djibril Balde, Embalo’s campaign spokesman, the claim on the victory is based on the preliminary result tallies which were compiled by observers in every region.
Pereira tweeted that fake news is in circulation and only official numbers should be respected.
