PARIS/BERLIN- On Friday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the European Union might need to extend the deadline for new trade relationship talks with Britain.
Both sides need to think about if there’s enough time for a new trade deal negotiation to work out the agreements about a series of other issues, said Von der Leyen.
She said that it would be reasonable to evaluate the situation by the middle of the year and then if needed, agree on a transition period extension.
A hard deadline of December 2020 has been set by Britain to reach a new trade deal with the EU. This bets the prospect of another cliff-edge Brexit which would force Brussels to work fast and seal an accord.
