Britain’s House of Commons new Speaker Lindsay Hoyle was shocked to hear about his diagnosis of diabetes, probably Type 1, a few days before the general election. However, he refused to miss the election campaign to undergo treatment.
62-year old Hoyle was urged to be hospitalised on losing approximately three stones leading up to poll day but he felt strong enough to hold his new role.
He said that he would get through this. He has been elected by the House of Commons to be the Speaker and Hoyle says that nothing is going to stop him from doing that.
If untreated, Type 1 diabetes can be fatal and may develop at any time. Insulin is not produced any longer by the pancreas resulting in weight and muscle loss and fatigue.
Hoyle was quick to draw similarities with fellow type I diabetic former PM Theresa May and called her an inspiration. He also stated that the Common’s staff have been extremely supportive.
The charity Diabetes UK applauded and praised Hoyle’s openness in talking about his condition.
Lindsay Hoyle was a unanimous reelect for the role of Speaker, where he has to referee and moderate parliamentary debates.
Hoylee is now undergoing further treatment.
